A closer look…
What is a memory book? A memory book is a collection of information that you want your kids to know verbatim OR simply interact with and be exposed to for a season. For example, I want my kids to know our address with total memorization. But I want them to be exposed to and enjoy the Charles Dicken’s poem for autumn time.
A typical morning is we all gather around the couch and after our Bible time we open up our memory books. We turn to the Daily tab and read aloud together the pages that are inserted there. Then we turn to the New tab and read aloud those pages. After that we turn to our review tab of the day and read the pages aloud together.
When I introduce something brand new, I will usually read the selection all at once for my pre-reader to hear the flow. Then we break it into chunks to focus on. After familiarity is built, we combine the sections and read through the entire work. Some selections, like Bible passages, take us all year to memorize.
Through the daily interaction and repeated readings my kids and I have been able to memorize Bible verses, poems, important personal information, and interacted with much that we wouldn’t have otherwise. We also focus on a character quality that we pray the Holy Spirit cultivates us as we submit to His lead.
